Consumers
seem to be losing more control of their private information since the formation
of the internet. Consumers do still have
the choice of whether or not they want to give out this information but
everything seems to be moving towards the internet and, before long, it seems
like it will be a total necessity. I
think with less control over this more information will be stolen. With the increase in information and
necessity of the internet, more information can be gained from hacking into
these databases and more people could lose their information. On top of that a new market could open up
where our information is traded between companies for profit which could open
up more venues for people to gain our personal information.
In relation to that, it is nice to
receive personalized advertisements.
Looking at what people Google or search for on shopping sites in not a
bad thing. All it is is effective
advertising and will only help out places or people who might not get the
traffic that they need to stay in business.
On top of that, you might find something better than what you were previously
going to buy and save money or time because of it. Targeted advertising does not seem to have
any effect on the consumer other than if you are trying to hide something from
someone.
The use of harmful stereotypes in
advertising will continue to have an adverse effect on society. As long as there are ads reinforcing the
stereotypes, the stereotypes will continue to exist and bring more people down. For example, all those ads with thin, over
sexualized women or insanely strong, confident men are going to continue to
mess with peoples self-image and make them strive for unhealthy things or hate
themselves for not being those people.
You mention that people search for what they're interested in. The question is: are these people interested in these things because of their own interest, or because of ads? Do you think that people having a poor self-image makes it easier for companies to make money? I do. It is similar to the way an abuser might emotionally cripple a victim to make them unable to fight back. I know that's an extreme analogy, but if you think about it, it's easier to sell to needy people than it is to people who feel complete. Someone who is confident in their self worth would not need to buy things to make them feel worthy.
ReplyDeleteI think the targeted ads aren't evil per se. It’s the sophisticated methods behind the targeted ads that make me worried. Imagine if a company sold all of that behavioral data to a government or non-profit entity that wanted to propagate certain social agendas with which we wouldn’t agree if made plain. This isn’t so farfetched, especially if we aren’t aware of the manipulation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you say personalized advertisements are effective. I don’t see anything wrong with internet tracking. I think the internet has already become a necessity and it is controlled well with information given out most of the time. Nothing with the internet will never be secure that why you just have to be careful and only give out what you are comfortable giving out. I also agree with you on stereotypes. They will continue to mess with people image of themselves.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really sure how much information they can take from internet tracking or what they do with it. Also, if there was a way for internet tracking to still customize our advertisements but keep the user anonymous that would be safer. If it's done this way it would make people feel more comfortable. They would still get to send out personalized ads, but to a person that was completely anonymous on the other side of the screen. I'm not sure if it is already like this or if they can track more into depth like full names, birthdates, and other personal information. Either way really it isn't even much of a risk then what we already expose out to people in our daily lives outside of the internet. Also, I also think that ads will continue to use sexy women and strong confident men , but I don't think it is a big problem because people can just choose to not care or let the advertisements get to them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this in that post about the internet and advertisement on it. It can be very expensive thing for the new business owners and this is why they should be focusing on the affordable methods only and keep experimenting with others one by one. I am only using Heymarket business bulk sms marketing app for now but will soon be trying out other online methods too.
ReplyDeleteI liked all of these details. I am also thinking to use the quality marketing services for my business and I know that the ppc ads will be beneficial because they will serve every purpose of increasing our sales as per our goals. I will definitely hire the Adwords Campaign Management services for that.
